From the Washington Administration to the present, Congress and the President have enacted 11 separate formal declarations of war against foreign nations in five different wars. Each declaration has been preceded by a presidential request either in writing or in person before a joint session of Congress. The reasons cited in justification for the requests have included armed attacks on United States territory or its citizens and threats to United States rights or interests as a sovereign...

Extinction by intergalactic gray dust introduces a magnitude redshift dependent offset in the standard-candle relation of SN Ia. This leads to overestimated luminosity distances compared to a dust-free universe. Quantifying the amplitude of this systematic effect is crucial for an accurate determination of the dark energy parameters. In this paper we model the gray dust extinction in terms of the star-formation history of the universe and the physical properties of the dust grains. We focus on...

Colliding hypersonic flows play a decisive role in many astrophysical objects. In this paper, we look at the idealized model of a 2D plane parallel isothermal slab (CDL) and at symmetric settings, where both flows have equal parameters. We performed a set of high-resolution simulations with upwind Mach numbers, 5 < M_u < 90. We find that the CDL is irregularly shaped and has a patchy and filamentary interior. The size of these structures increases with l_cdl, the extension of the CDL. On...

We explore the infrared spectrum of a three-dimensional dynamical model of planet HD209458b as a function of orbital phase. The dynamical model predicts day-side atmospheric pressure-temperature profiles that are much more isothermal at pressures less than 1 bar than one-dimensional radiative-convective models have found. The resulting day-side thermal spectra are very similar to a blackbody, and only weak water absorption features are seen at short wavelengths. The dayside emission is...

We construct an Abel-Jacobi type map on the homologically trivial part of Lawson homology groups. It generalizes the Abel-Jacobi map constructed by Griffiths. By using a result of H. Clemens, we give some examples of smooth projective manifolds with infinite generated Lawson homology groups L_pH_k(X,Q) when k>2p.

In an attempt to improve on our earlier W3 theory [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 120}, 4129 (2004)] we consider such refinements as more accurate estimates for the contribution of connected quadruple excitations ($\hat{T}_4$), inclusion of connected quintuple excitations ($\hat{T}_5$), diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections (DBOC), and improved basis set extrapolation procedures. Revised experimental data for validation purposes were obtained from the latest version of the ATcT (Active Thermochemical...

We investigate both thermoelectric and thermodynamic properties of the misfit cobalt oxide [Bi$_{1.7}$Co$_{0.3}$Ca$_{2}$O$_{4}$]$^{RS}_{0.6}$CoO$_{2}$. A large negative magnetothermopower is found to scale with both magnetic field and temperature revealing a significant spin entropy contribution to thermoelectric properties giving rise to a constant S$_0\approx$ 60 $\mu$V K$^{-1}$ equal to the high temperature asymptotic value of the spin 1/2 entropy. Low temperature specific heat measurements...

The properties of a vortex in a rotating superfluid Fermi gas are studied in the unitary limit. A phenomenological approach based on Ginzburg-Landau theory is developed for this purpose. The density profiles, including those of the normal fluid and superfluid, are obtained at various temperatures and rotation frequencies. The superfluid and normal fluid densities can be identified from the angular momentum density. The total free energy and angular momentum of the vortex are also obtained.

We use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate translational and rotational diffusion in a rigid three-site model of the fragile glass former ortho-terphenyl, at 260 K < T < 346 K and ambient pressure. An Einstein formulation of rotational motion is presented, which supplements the commonly-used Debye model. The latter is shown to break down at supercooled temperatures as the mechanism of molecular reorientation changes from small random steps to large infrequent orientational...

We analyze the public transport networks (PTNs) of a number of major cities of the world. While the primary network topology is defined by a set of routes each servicing an ordered series of given stations, a number of different neighborhood relations may be defined both for the routes and the stations. The networks defined in this way display distinguishing properties, the most striking being that often several routes proceed in parallel for a sequence of stations. Other networks with...

We consider type II string theory compactified on a symmetric T^6/Z_2 orientifold. We study a general class of discrete deformations of the resulting four-dimensional supergravity theory, including gaugings arising from geometric and "nongeometric'' fluxes, as well as the usual R-R and NS-NS fluxes. Solving the equations of motion associated with the resulting N = 1 superpotential, we find parametrically controllable infinite families of supersymmetric vacua with all moduli stabilized. We...

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements mapping the in-plane magnetic interactions of Na0.5CoO2 reveal dispersive excitations at points above an energy gap Eg = 11.5(5) meV at the superstructural Bragg reflections. The excitations are highly damped, broadening with increasing energy, and disappear at hw ~ 35 meV, a strong indication that the magnetism is itinerant. Tilting into the ac plane reduces the value of Eg by 25%, suggesting that the dispersion along c is significant and the magnetic...

We show that a double quantum-dot system made of diluted magnetic semiconductor behaves unlike usual molecules. In a semiconductor double quantum dot or in a diatomic molecule, the ground state of a single carrier is described by a symmetric orbital. In a magnetic material molecule, new ground states with broken symmetry can appear due the competition between the tunnelling and magnetic polaron energy. With decreasing temperature, the ground state changes from the normal symmetric state to a...

The intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnets depends on subtle spin-orbit-induced effects in the electronic structure, and recent ab-initio studies found that it was necessary to sample the Brillouin zone at millions of k-points to converge the calculation. We present an efficient first-principles approach for computing the anomalous Hall conductivity. We start out by performing a conventional electronic-structure calculation including spin-orbit coupling on a uniform and relatively...

Clouds containing molecular dark matter in quantities relevant for star formation may exist in minihaloes of the type of cold dark matter included in many cosmological simulations or in the regions of some galaxies extending far beyond their currently known boundaries. We have systematically explored parameter space to identify conditions under which plane-parallel clouds contain sufficient column densities of molecular dark matter that they could be reservoirs for future star formation. Such...

Let $G_1 \times G_2$ be a subgroup of $\mathrm{SO}_3(\mathbb{R})$ such that the two factors $G_1$ and $G_2$ are non-trivial groups. We show that if $G_1 \times G_2$ is not abelian, then one factor is the (abelian) group of order 2, and the other factor is non-abelian and contains an element of order 2. There exist finite and infinite such non-abelian subgroups.

In a recent paper we have presented results for a set of massive scalar one-loop master integrals needed in the NNLO parton model description of the hadroproduction of heavy flavors. The one--loop integrals were evaluated in $n=4-2\ep$ dimension and the results were presented in terms of a Laurent series expansion up to ${\cal O}(\ep^2)$. We found that some of the $\ep^2$ coefficients contain a new class of functions which we termed the $L$ functions. The $L$ functions are defined in terms of...

We develop a formalism for particle production in a field theory coupled to a strong time-dependent external source. An example of such a theory is the Color Glass Condensate. We derive a formula, in terms of cut vacuum-vacuum Feynman graphs, for the probability of producing a given number of particles. This formula is valid to all orders in the coupling constant. The distribution of multiplicities is non--Poissonian, even in the classical approximation. We investigate an alternative method of...

The proton diffractive structure function $F_2^{D(3)}$ measured in the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA are analysed in terms of perturbative QCD in the perspective of the QCD extrapolation to the Tevatron and the LHC. It is shown that both data sets can be well described by a QCD analysis in which point-like parton distributions, evolving according to the next-leading DGLAP equations, are assigned to the leading and sub-leading Regge exchanges. For present data from H1 and ZEUS the gluon...
